Seaton Carew Golf Club
Established in 1874, Seaton Carew is the 10th oldest Golf Club in England. The Club has hosted the Brabazon Trophy on two occasions, and offers a great combination of tradition and quality; it has been voted 53rd in Golf World's Top 100 Courses in England.
When it was first established this classic links course became the only golf club in the English counties of Yorkshire and Durham, hence its original name The Durham & Yorkshire Golf Club. In commemoration of this, today the Club's crest and badge retain the emblems of both the Archbishop of Durham and The Archbishop of York.
The Golf course has benefitted from the skills and vision of two of golf's great architects in Alistair MacKenzie and more recently, Frank Pennink. It has 22 holes of pure links golf, and is recognised as one of the finest links in the UK. As a result of the 22 holes, 5 different routes can be played, although the Old, the Barbazon and the Micklem are the most commonly used.
"It is a splendid course. Personally I am very fond of seaside links. They are natural and provide very interesting and varied types of holes. The Seaton links are very well groomed, the greens lovely, and the fairways and lies good. It is not an easy course. It provides a good test of golf and is one on which I should like to play quite often."
Those were the thoughts of four times Open champion Walter Hagen after a visit to Seaton Carew on Saturday 24th of July 1937.
