Somerset Golf Tour

A visit to the stunning Spa town of Bath on the way to some wonderful links on the Somerset coast is a golf tour in easy reach of London and Birmingham.

Weston super Mare Golf Club is a superb links course with over 125 years of history initially designed by Tom Dunne then slight modification carried out in the 1920’s by Dr Alistair Mackenzie famous for The Masters, Augusta National USA.

The little seaside town on the Somerset coast is a popular tourist resort and has all the traditional qualities of a town set on the shore. Its golf club, similarly, has a course with all the characteristics you would come to expect of a links style layout. Prevailing sea breezes - that can really mess up your round, so beware - and numerous hazards carefully positioned on each of the holes ready to gobble up any stray shots you fire.

At 6300 yards in length, it is long enough to satisfy the demands of the discerning club golfer without tiring out those who prefer a more leisurely round.

Burnham & Berrow is a bona fide hidden gem with cleverly-chosen natural green sites and a tough closing stretch. A strong links course beside the Bristol Channel where if the wind blows you will be tested to the limits. This historic links is very fair but tough test of golf.

With many fairways and greens overlooked by giant sand dunes, it’s the south west’s answer to Royal Birkdale and is now widely considered one of England’s finest links. Touched by the hands of genius including Colt, Fowler and Mackenzie, B&B begins at a pulsating pace – the opening three holes epitomise everything that is great and challenging about links golf - and rarely lets up until the moment you reach the comfort of the wonderful century-old clubhouse where you can relax in style. Watch out for the lightning quick greens.

In the 1963 English Amateur Championship final at B&B, Sir Michael Bonallack got up and down 22 times in 33 holes en-route to a 4&3 victory. This feat is impressive on paper, but even more remarkable to those who have attempted to conquer B&B's tricky putting surfaces. Of these, the two-tiered 12th green can prove particularly demonic though it's not alone.
